ABOUT US

The Walbunja Rangers, established by the Batemans Bay Local Aboriginal Land Council in response to the Black Summer Fires, represent a profound commitment to ecological stewardship and cultural preservation on Yuin country in the south of New South Wales. This group, led by Andrew White, includes 10-15 young First Nations rangers who engage in cultural burning, pest eradication, and species monitoring and conservation. Their work not only helps restore and protect the environment but also offers meaningful career paths that honor their cultural heritage. This initiative has been recognized with the Marie Byles Award for inspiring community action due to its significant impact on local biodiversity and community engagement.

The Walbunja Rangers perform vital land management tasks, including cultural burning, revegetation, and monitoring threatened species, in an effort to maintain the health of the local ecosystem, especially following the severe impacts of the 2019/20 fires. Their efforts extend to educational roles, conducting workshops on cultural burning practices with local Rural Fire Services and collaborating with various agencies to enhance regional biodiversity and cultural understanding. This model of integrating Indigenous traditional knowledge with contemporary conservation practices showcases a sustainable approach to land management that respects and preserves Aboriginal cultural heritage.
